TERM 4 REFLECTION (PART II)

20.05.2009
Music Theory and Instrument Class
The class started out with us having our theory class in the Elementary Technology room because our usual room was occupied. Mr.John basically taught us a little bit on notes and then we had to draw certain notes on the board or name them. Those who couldn't do that had to stand up in front of the class. This kind of exercise helps us in learning how to transpose notes. We also had to be able to put flats, sharps and the natural sign too. Overall the class was quite interesting.
Then in the next session everyone had to perform their composition in front of the class as a simulation for next week's practical examinations. Some of us got critics, some of us got compliments, others got tips on how to improve. There were also some who didn't practise, or was too shy. While waiting for our turn, or listening to the performances given, we got a chance to fill in a questionnaire (or feedback sheet?) on our instrument teacher. I had to write about Mr.John. We basically had to honestly speak out our mind and write the weaknesses and strengths of our music teacher. I think this is quite effective because this way the students aren't the only ones who has to listen to criticism, but teachers also. They get to really know what the students personally think of them.

Conclusion for Term Four
This term was just as interesting as the previous one, but time flew by and the weeks definitely felt shorter. In my instrument class, this term it was focused on preparing my composition and being able to play it in the practical exams. I got a chance to learn about putting chords in, and also learnt to play my composition properly. I can know even read tabs. I had to be dilligent and practiced everyday so that I could play fluently. In this class I also learned the classical song 'Andantino' which has a relaxing melody. It was fun to have spent one whole semester in guitar class. A lot of knowledge has been gained and that knowledge will always stay in my head.
When it came to the theory class, I had also learnt a variety of things that I have not learned in music classes in other schools. Just like the instrument class, the theory class focused on our compositions but on the other hand, that was not the only thing studied. We learned about transposing notes. I personally also gained confidence in singing during the reading exercises. I was also taught how to use the software Finale, a software I never heard of before, but now am quite familiar with. I had to blog, which was actually interesting. I also got used to performing once or twice in front of my classmates. I am satisfied with this term, and is wating with bated breath, wondering what next year's music class would be like.
