TERM 4 REFLECTION (PART II)

20.05.2009
Music Theory and Instrument Class
The class started out with us having our theory class in the Elementary Technology room because our usual room was occupied. Mr.John basically taught us a little bit on notes and then we had to draw certain notes on the board or name them. Those who couldn't do that had to stand up in front of the class. This kind of exercise helps us in learning how to transpose notes. We also had to be able to put flats, sharps and the natural sign too. Overall the class was quite interesting.
Then in the next session everyone had to perform their composition in front of the class as a simulation for next week's practical examinations. Some of us got critics, some of us got compliments, others got tips on how to improve. There were also some who didn't practise, or was too shy. While waiting for our turn, or listening to the performances given, we got a chance to fill in a questionnaire (or feedback sheet?) on our instrument teacher. I had to write about Mr.John. We basically had to honestly speak out our mind and write the weaknesses and strengths of our music teacher. I think this is quite effective because this way the students aren't the only ones who has to listen to criticism, but teachers also. They get to really know what the students personally think of them.

Conclusion for Term Four
This term was just as interesting as the previous one, but time flew by and the weeks definitely felt shorter. In my instrument class, this term it was focused on preparing my composition and being able to play it in the practical exams. I got a chance to learn about putting chords in, and also learnt to play my composition properly. I can know even read tabs. I had to be dilligent and practiced everyday so that I could play fluently. In this class I also learned the classical song 'Andantino' which has a relaxing melody. It was fun to have spent one whole semester in guitar class. A lot of knowledge has been gained and that knowledge will always stay in my head.
When it came to the theory class, I had also learnt a variety of things that I have not learned in music classes in other schools. Just like the instrument class, the theory class focused on our compositions but on the other hand, that was not the only thing studied. We learned about transposing notes. I personally also gained confidence in singing during the reading exercises. I was also taught how to use the software Finale, a software I never heard of before, but now am quite familiar with. I had to blog, which was actually interesting. I also got used to performing once or twice in front of my classmates. I am satisfied with this term, and is wating with bated breath, wondering what next year's music class would be like.

TERM 4 REFLECTION (PART I)

April

01.04.2009
Music Theory Class
Today was actually our very first music class of term 4. We all just came back from our holidays. In this session we were being taught about an interesting topic called pentatonic scales. We learnt about two pentatnoic scales: 12357 and 13457. Afterwards Mr.John told us to compose one composition using each pentatonic scale. It was quite interesting. Mr.Herry also taught us about the AA'BA' format which helped me in creating my own melody. Then, we were given homework to create another composition which we would then put on the finale in the future.

Instrument Class
Because it was our very first instrument class after the holiday, we kind of relaxed. We played a few songs we learnt from the previous term and also listened to Mr.John play some of our favorite songs. it was quite fun and relaxing. It gave me a chance to strum and play the chords. Oh, and, Mr.John also taught us how to play the C Major Scale.

08.04.2009
Music Theory Class
During today's theory session, Mr.Herry checked our melody that we made for homework. I actually sat by my piano at home as I made my melody, so I was quite happy with my melody. My melody was then used as an example in class, and altogether we put funny lyrics and it was enjoyable. Mr.Herry actually sang the melody for us so we could hear what it was like. When we finished listening to Mr.Herry, we made lyrics for our song. The theme of my lyrics were mothers.

Instrument Class
Mr.John was absent today, so Ms.Melvina took over our class. We all played the C Major Scale as a class with Ms.Melvina accompanying us on the piano. She also listened to us play a few songs and gave us a few criticism and tips on how to improve. She also reminded us to practice alot so that we could master the songs.

15.04.2009
Music Theory Class
In today's class we had to finalize our melody and then we were shown where we could download the Finale Software. The Finale Software would be the software we are using to create music sheets for our song. Mr.Al actually helped us and he was the one who showed us the steps in downloading the Finale.

Instrument Class
It was a quite interesting session today. During class, Mr.John gave us the classical song that we were to play during our assessment the week after next. The classical song was called Andantino. We were taught to read tabs, and then was given the tabs for Andantino. Afterwards Mr.John played us the song itself. It was a good song, and sounded nice and smooth.

22.04.2009
Music Theory Class
Me and almost all of my classmates had issues in putting the song onto the Finale. Therefore the teachers had to show us again how to put the song and also gave us tips and explained the little details that were minor yet important. After watching them I tried to remember everything taught so that I won't have any more trouble in using the sofware.

Instrument Class
Today's session was basically focused on preparing the assessment next week. We had to each play the song so that Mr.John could tell us what we could improve on. Then we tried to play together as the class. By today's session I actually could already play quite well but I still got a little bit criticism. Overall the class was pretty fun.

29.04.2009
Music Theory Class
In today's session we had to submit the hard copy and soft copy of our Finale. We also had to submit the URL of our music blog. But, most of the students in my class didn't submit the Finale copies therefore we were actually lectured by Mr.Herry. Besides that we didn't do anything else.

Instrument Class
Today was the day of the assessment. First Mr.John played the song again, giving us tips on how to ace the exam. Then we started the assessment. The order of the performance was alphabetical. I quite enjoyed watching my classmates play, seeing who practiced and who didn't. I gave them moral support too. When it was my turn, it was quite nerve-wracking and I think I need to play a little bit slower next time. Cindy was the one who got the highest score in our class, which is a score of 95. I got a score of 90.

May

06.05.2009
Music Theory Class
In today's session we talked about major scales, sharps etc. We also had an oral quiz talking about transposing and other such things. After that we had a discussion as a class talking about the FINALE and how our work was going to be assessed through that. Also, during this session many people had not submitted the soft copy of their FINALE.

Instrument Class
In today's class Mr.John gave us the chords to put in our song. The chords for MY melody varied, they were: C, F , G Em and Am. After being added the chords, my melody had a certain fullness and sounded more richer. I played the melody whereas Mr.John accompanied me and played the chords instead. It sounded pretty good and I was proud of my composition. After me, Mr.John helped my other classmates in putting the chords. I also helped by playing the melody on the piano that was available in the guitar room. It was a fun and quite effective class. Oh, and we were told to practice playing our melody at home.

13.05.2009
Music Theory Class
In today's session we had to do some singing exercises. We first had to copy fouor melodies into our notebook. After that we had to sing each melody together as a whole class. This type of exercise would improve our skills in ready notes and such. Some of the melodies had high notes that I couldn't reach. Then, each music class had to perform the melodies. When it came to the guitar class, Yonathan and Johan didn't perform that well, therefore they had to stay back. Then, they had to perform by themselves. It was quite interesting to watch them perform and sing, in fact it was quite funny. Then it came to the violin class. They were the best to perform and I think it is because they had a lot of talented singers in their class.

Instrument Class
Today's instrument session wasn't that long. First we had to go to our own music class and practice our melody with the accompaniment of our music teacher. After 15 minutes past, we had to gather again in the music room to listen to performances done by some of our fellow classmates. First we listened to all the piano students play; they were fluent and their compositions had beautiful melodies. After them, Min Kyo performed HER composition on the flute with Mr.Herry accompanying on the piano. Then it was guitar students. I was the first to perform, and I was quite nervous in doing so. I made just one mistake but overall I personally think I did a pretty good job. Christian and Yonathan even said my melody sounded like a Chinese sleeping song, but I don't know if that is a compliment or not. Then Cindy, Jesslyn, Jeong Min and Olivia performed their compositions, and then we wrapped up the class.

TERM 3 REFLECTION

January

14.01.2009
Music Theory Class:
Today was our very first music class. My teacher for the first session theory class was Mr.John Legoh. in this class we were told to choose the instrument that we would like to play. I chose the piano class though I was not that fluent in playing it. During this session we were also told to bring four resources each session: Journal, Music Folder, Music Notebook and our Instrument if we chose a hand-carried instrument (guitar, violin).
Afterwards we had auditions. We first had a singing audition. We were told to listen to the notes played and repeated it by singing or humming. The auditions were individual. Afterwards, those who wanted to join piano, including me, had to take another audition so that the piano teacher Mr. Herry could see our abillities and then decide weather we made it or not.

21.01.2009
Music Theory Class:
Today we were informed that we would have to present about Asian Music in a form of a powerpoint presentation. We had to group ourselves into six and choose one music topic: Japan, India, Korea or China. I did the Japanese music together with 5 people which are Jacklin, Grace, Sarah, Jordi and Jesslyn. Together, we also filled our KWL Chart which we would use as a base for my team's presentation.

Instrument Class:
During our piano class, I had quite a difficult time because everyone was ahead of me and was more fluent in playing then me. We had to play one classical song that we mastered and also the scales. I was pretty okay in playing the scales but I wasn't very confident in playing the song. In this class there was Sarah, Jacklin, Minkyo, Nadia and Callista. I also listened to the others play; they were ah-mazing.

28.01.2009
Music Theory Class:
This week was the week where we had to present about Asian music. Our team did research on Japanese Music and had also prepared a presentation. Personally I thought our presentation wasn't boring and went pretty well. The criticism we got was to add music clips so that people could get a sample of the Japanese music. We also got a chance to watch other teams present. During the session, Mr.Peter and Mr.Tommy observed us. And, because we had to do these presentations, we didn't have enough time to join our instrument class.

February

04.02.2009
Music Theory Class:
In this week's session Mr John taught us an important part of music: The Major Scales. We were taught how to 'create' the next scale by adding sharps or flats. This theory is important if we want to be able to master a musical instrument. I quite understood it because I learnt it before but thanks to this I understood it better, it was like reviewing the subject more deeply. Also, we learnt about upper and lower tetrachords which would help us in understanding the scales. Besides that, Mr.John also taught us the hand signals for each note, DO RE MI FA SOL LA TI DO.

Instrument Class:
Honestly speaking, I felt quite left behind in my piano class, therefore I asked to move to the beginner guitar class so I can experience new things and play with those my level. After I moved instrument class, I felt more confident and excited in learning a new instrument. My classmates were Yonathan, Johan, Dimas, Cindy, Joceline and Jesslyn, During this first class, I was taught finger exercises. The order of my fingers from the ring finger to my thumb was called PIMA. The exercises given was PAMI PIMA PAMIAMIA and PIMAMI, basically just moving around the order of the strumming fingers. The exercises helped my strumming skils.

11.02.2009
Music Theory Class:
in this theory class, we were reviewing our Learning Plan Guide sheet that had been handed to us. We also then did an outline for our individual report based on the powerpoint presentation we had done earlier in the term. We also learnt and sang a Chinese song called "Little Silver Moon Boat'. It was fun singing as a class and listening to the teachers, Mr. Herry, Mr.John and Mr.Hary, perform. I even found myself humming the tune of that song.

Instrument Class:
During the guitar session, we put our strumming skills to the test. After practising the strumming exercises, we were then taught the C major scale. It wasn't that hard to memorize but we just had to make sure we used the right finger to press or strum. After being to able to master the scale, we played the song 'Ode to Joy'. When we made a mistake we just laughed it off and continued playing as a class. Besides that song, we also learnt a classical song I've heard so often and longed to be able to play. The song is "Romance DeAmor". I have heard many people play it and it's a very nice song, so when I was taught the basics by Mr.John, I was excited.

18.02.2009
Music Theory Class:
Again, during the class we had to sing the Chinese song we learnt last week, 'Little Silver Moon Boat'. This was just a practice, and I sang with Jesslyn. We sang loud an though we weren't that good we still had a good time, It was also nice to just relax and listen to other people's singing. If we were given any type of criticism, we just took it in so that we can improve for our real singing assessment.

Instrument Class:
Our homework was actually to keep continuing to practice our C major scale so that we could play the guitar properly and know which note is where. Now that we know the C major scale, we are now able to be taught chords, wich is really exciting. During this class we were taught simple chords which are C, Am, Dm and G. Even with just these four chords, I could already play a song! the song is called "I Can't Smile Without You". I was satisfied with the progress I have made and the things I have learnt and slowly mastered. But, I wasn't outstanding yet so I had to practice practice practice. My nails and fingers ached like crazy because I was not used to it yet.

25.02.2009
Music Theory Class:
In today's class, we had our singing assessment. It was nerve-wracking. I paired myself with Jacklin. We sang the song "Little Silver Moon Boat" again. It wasn't that boring though.
After the singing session, we had to prepare ourselves for next week's written exam. Therefore we didn't make time for an instrument class. Instead, two music teachers, Mr.Hary and Mr.John, explained the scales more so that we could understand it and would do well in the exam. I tried to pay attention on what was being told because I want to get a satisfying score in the written exam.

March

04.03.2009
Music Theory Class:
We finally came to the week we were quite nervous for: The written exam week. The test was about Asian Music, the chords and the major and/or minor scales. I actually did pretty well in the section about major scales because I quite understood the topic. But the Asian music section was quite difficult because the questions were based on the presentation given by us and our classmates, and some of them didn't give sufficient information nor gave it clearly. Next time I think I should study more. I hope I got a good score.

Instrument Class:
For today's guitar class, we talked more about chords. We learnt even more chords such as F, E, Em, D and A. I like today's class. Plus, we got a chance to play a song we liked from our iPods and such, giving a chance for Mr.John to listen, then he would play it to us, and help us learnt the basics of it. This way, we got a chance to choose a song we liked and learn at the same time. After reviewing a few other things about chords and strumming, we had free time and listened to Mr. John play some of our favorite songs.

11.03.2009
Music Theory Class:
Today's class was interesting. we learnt about two different types of pentatonic scales: DO RE MI SOL LA and DO MI FA SOL SI. We then had to create a composition using each pentatonic scale. Because I didn't have an instrument nearby that I could use to play the notes, I had to just use my feeling as I created my composition. It turned out okay. Then, the class got to see the compostitions of Sarah and Johan. When the theory class almost ended, each instrument class had to sing Johan's composition. Our guitar class confidently marched up front as the first class to perform. It showed team work and though we weren't as good as the vocal group we still had enthusiasm which was also important.

Instrument Class:
We focused again on strumming properly so our chords sounded good. We played again the chords we could learn. Afterwards, Mr.John taught us a song by Rod Stewart called "I don't wanna talk about it". Because it was an old song the melody sounded old and yet the song was catchy. the chords varied from D, E, to A7. I had fun strumming and just making music together with my fellow classmates.

Conclusion For Term Three
I gained a lot of knowledge from this term. When it came to music theory, I learnt alot. I learnt about Asian Music, and also about the chords. Besides that, I now understood clearly why this major or minor scale has this flat or this sharp. I was also able to create my own compostitions using pentatonic scales!
It was the same in my instrument class; I gained a lot of knowledge. I got to be able to play a variety of chords (C, D, Dm, E, Em, F, G, A, Am) on the guitar and also learnt a few songs. Besides that, I learnt how to play the C major scale using the guitar and also the basics like proper ways of strumming. Although I went through a few diffficulties in the beginning of the term, I am glad now that I am in a class I am more comfortable with and that now I could play a new instrument. I am proud of what I had achieved and is both glad and sad that the term is now over.
